September the 25th 2013 – NICE have approved the use of the epithelium off CXL procedure.
Corneal Collagen Cross-linking or Intacs® XL consists of placing a drop of IntacsXL (riboflavin solution) onto the surface of the cornea. A UV-A light source is then activated whereby illumination with UV-A light for between 3 and 30 minutes is applied to the corneal surface.
IntacsXL causes new cellular bonds to form in the stromal layer of the cornea yielding a strengthening effect within the cornea’s stromal layers. The corneal epithelial layer is generally removed to provide adequate absorption of IntacsXL into the stromal layer of the cornea.
IntacsXL is the only product available that uses pharmaceutical grade dextran and Viskotrol™ technology.
IntacsXL calibrates the viscosity to ensure accurate dosing for every procedure. It is formulated under a proprietary manufacturing process known as Fotoloking™, which ensures zero degradation of riboflavin. Everything has been taken into account to provide the most predictable and highest quality outcomes for patient and surgeon.
Intacs XL can offer 4 light intensities – 3, 9, 18 and 30mW/cm2 which offers variation in treatment times of between 30, 10, 5 and 3 minutes.
